Valuable lessons my dad taught me

I want to say that there are many things that I have learnt from my father. Bond between father and daughters.
Here are some lessons that he taught me by his own behavior not by his words:
  • Respect- If you want your child to respect you, set the example first children don’t listen they observe. Teach them respect by an example first children don’t listen they observe. Teach them respect by example, by respecting them first.
  • Listen- doesn’t listen to shut them up. Put everything down (Yes even your phone) Sit down with them, look them in the eye, don’t interrupt them and really listen to what they are saying. If you want them to listen to you, start by listening to them first.
  • Don’t deny them what they are feeling- This is hard as a parent because you may not always agree with what they have to say but it is important that you show your child that you accept and respect how they feel. Behind every great daughter is a truly amazing dad.
  • Never Use fear to instill respect or discipline- Ask yourself this do you want your child to respect you because they are afraid of you or do you want your child to respect you because they love you.
  • Never get angry when your child admits something they did wrong- The fear of being yelled at will encourage the child to lies to his/her parents rather than admit the truth. Show them that you can handle the truth. Save the yelling for an emergency situation.
  • Be a good friend to find good friend- Healthy friends cultivate healthy friendships and my parents taught and modeled what it means to be a good friend to other.
  • Care about the right things- My parents provide, protect and care for everything . And if there is a greater compliment to be given, I am not sure what it is. Some people don’t believe in heroes but they haven’t met my dad.
  • Appreciate teachers- I learnt to appreciate the time, energy, commitment and care that teachers show every day.
